But I think I’m getting desperate.

I am the most unintentional automotive “hipster” I know. I fall for seemingly attainable, at times maligned, cars. Then they turn out to be frustratingly elusive — IS Sportcross, Tercel wagon, 2-door XJ, manual Allroad, even an old goddamn Corolla liftback.

I guess I also didn’t predict 1) selling my Celica in one day, and 2) going three months without having bought its replacement. It’s now November and the selection of vehicles will only get even thinner :/ Here’s to another winter of the longbed on black-iced roads.

At the price point you’re looking at, yes it’s probably a horrible idea. Newer cars still under factory warranty? I’ve done it once and would do it again.

I can’t think anything I’d want more — within the budget, of course. Would it be too much to hope to find one under my Christmas tree this year?

I recently had one in my grasp but it fell through rather anticlimactically.

Yes and I am still relieved. When I sold it, there were 3 other Celicas for sale locally - two of them coupes - for comparable price but not as good condition as mine. Three months later, two of those are still for sale. That was my primary goal: taking the first reasonable offer and preventing another 2-month ordeal of my car sitting on CL.

I saw a 4x4 tercel for sale on the Brooklyn CL a month ago. Looked clean for a NY car but I don’t know crap where these cars rust. Wanted it but just couldn’t afford it. Weight on the longbed helps for slippery roads or not at all?

Longer wheelbase leads to slightly better stability when sliding. The extra hundred pounds or so that a slightly longer truck gains doesn’t make for all that much traction.

I’ve also found that adding weight doesn’t really make much difference in traction, but shifting the centre of mass rearwards does increase tailhappiness. I don’t carry extra weight in the MJ in winter for that reason, even though I mostly drive in 2wd. If I do need added traction, that’s what 4x4's for.

Those Corolla 4x4 wagons jump out at me whenever I look at my local CL but I’ve never seen one listed that’s not pretty haggard.

You could lower this https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/5855222295.html and it would look like a big version of the Corolla 4x4 and fulfill your destiny of being an automotive hipster as it seems like the market for early foresters particularly with manuals is moving more towards the stance/Jdm crowd.
